An intranet can be thought of as a smaller version of the internet. An intranet allows a company to network all of its computers together thus allowing for secure data and file sharing. Intranets are a great tool for collaborating, communicating, and information sharing. They also provide greater speed and security than the internet. Sites can even be hosted on intranets so that anyone using the network can view the site but it is not available to the "public". Intranets can even be set up so that users can log into them remotely provided they have a username and password thus allowing for even more flexibility. Portals are a collection of web applications all located on one web page. Common applications include search engines, email applications, chat clients, content management systems, and RSS feeds. A portal takes many different tools and consolidates them in one place. Doing so increases productivity as well as increases the compatibility of the tools. Portals can be created for both the internet as well as smaller networks such as an intranet. |
